The Year 9 curriculum is demanding and varied in order to offer a wide range of academic opportunities to students who will choose their GCSE and IGCSE subjects during the Lent term. Our staff will begin to use more of the methodologies associated with GCSE in this year in order to prepare students for what lies ahead.
Year 9 Maths
We start GCSE Maths work in year 9. The express sets could take Mathematics GCSE in May of Year 10 and the Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics in the June of Year 11. This enable capable student to take additional subjects for GCSE.
Due to the requirement from some schools, we provide support GCSE Statistics in year 9. The course followed is EDEXCEL. Students sit the examination in June and they also have to complete an assessed task which contributes to their final grade.
Year 9 English
Our English programme is to promote high standards of language and literacy by furnishing pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.
Programme will be involved in reading, viewing, listening, writing, creating, comparing, researching, and problem solving, reflecting and talking about a range of text types:
- Shakespeare (two plays)
- Short stories and creating an original short story
- English literature, both pre-1914 and contemporary, including prose, poetry and drama
- Making inferences and referring to evidence in the text
- Study of persuasive langauge; learning to recognize the language of persuasion and using persuasive language to influence people
- knowing the purpose, audience for and context of the writing and drawing on this knowledge to support comprehension
- Study of language, grammar, punctuation, note-taking and summary writing
- Active involvement in the wide-reading programme
- Knowing how language, including figurative language, vocabulary choice, grammar, text structure and organisational features, presents meaning
Year 9 Science
Year 9 is the most precarious year for students before sitting their GCSEs. It is fundamental that students are prepared in answering challenging questions that is potentially asked by the exam board. Out tuition is designed to cover every aspect of the curriculum before reaching to Year 10. Year 9 will be penetrating in terms of covering the topics that will border the standards of the GCSE curriculum.
Assessment
Students are tested regularly (5-6 Weeks), and at their tutor's discretion, in order to allow us to monitor their progress
Each week will have a set topic and average teaching time will be two hours which includes a mini test/recap on the topics covered previously.
Home work
All students are required to complete given homework for each week. Teachers will usually mark homework. Additional homework can even be marked by parents by login to our online learning system (learningwaves.com) where you can find answer sheets for the given homework.
Feedback
Feedback will be given at the end of every session, every week by teaching staff. Parents will have an opportunity to meet the teachers at the send of the sessions for feedback and to discuss any concerns related to the learning process.
Progress tests
There will be a progress test at the end of each school term (every 6 weeks). After the progress test, a progress reports will also be provided, by highlighting your child’s strengths and weaknesses, including targets for next term.
Based on the progress, we can arrange additional support or learning programmes to bridge any learning gaps.

All the class materials, progress tests, mock exam papers, assessments, parental guidance sessions are included within the course fees. Once registered with us, additional books and online resource can be purchased at discounted rates.
