Which schools use the CAT4?
Both state schools and private schools use the CAT4.
A large number of independent/private schools also use the CAT4 for streaming purposes. Scoring well in the test may mean your child is placed in a higher ability set within their year group.
If your child is taking the 11+ exam, the CAT4 test they take at the beginning of Year 6 is especially important.
What is the CAT4 test for?
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) is an assessment of developed abilities in areas known to make a difference to learning and achievement – namely verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial reasoning – and provides you with an accurate analysis of potential student achievement.
A CAT4 test battery involves evaluating the following skills:
Non-Verbal Reasoning – Thinking about shapes and patterns. Shapes and patterns are presented and the student is asked to determine what comes next, or what the patterns are within the shapes.
Verbal Reasoning – Word patterns are presented with the student asked to determine which words belong, which don’t, and how they are connected.
Quantitative Reasoning – Number patterns are shown and the student is expected to quickly work out the next value.
Spatial Ability – Generating and transforming visual images by being presented with shapes and their transformation – the student is then asked to select the final shape.
